F. P. JOURNE
The master of resonance
F. P. Journe

It is perhaps fitting that a watchmaker who struggled to have his work appreciated by established brands, spurring on his decision to go independent, is today one of the most coveted. The aesthetic that was popularised with the Souscription watches has been sustained in the Souverain Tourbillon and the two other lines foundational to the brand’s offering – the Chronomètre à Résonance and the Octa Réserve de Marche. Journe has had almost unparalleled success in growing his manufacture, utilising advances in watchmaking technology, while staying true to his pioneering spirit encapsulated in his credo, “Invenit et Fecit”. His manufacture has nurtured independent names such as Rexhep Rexhepi and his Young Talent Competition hopes to continue the tradition of fine, handmade watchmaking.
In the landscape of independent makers, Journe’s offering occupies a singular position. His output, industrial in the context of independent makers, as well as the diversity of his catalogue, both past and present, sets him apart in a space marked by exceedingly small production numbers and long, or closed, wait lists.
While the early years of the brand are indubitably interesting, representing an inflection point not just in Journe’s story but that of independent watchmaking itself, we are equally intrigued by the middle years. This period – marked by transition of metals, finishing and manufacturing processes – represents the kind of rich tapestry indicative of a brand beginning to find its place in the world. It is replete with interesting details that reveal themselves only on closer inspection, a quality that makes this era interesting to seasoned collectors.
